For me, the most powerful moment in the courtroom Friday came in the testimony of Dr. Jan Garavaglia. She explained to the jury that she made systemic observational studies caused her to reach the conclusion that the manner of Caylee's death was homicide. She pointed to the points that supported her conclusion:
- The child was not reported to the authorities for an extended period of time.
- The body was hidden
- The body was in a closed container
- The duct tape located on the skull
Then in a quavering voice she said: "There is no child who should have duct tape on its face when it dies. There is no reason to put duct tape on their faces after they die." Dr. G said it all.
The duct tape was the focal point of the day, coming up again and again. It was something I'd written about in my book, Mommy's Little Girl:
"When the process was complete, it would have been easy to persuade Caylee to inhale the sweet-smelling fumes. It would not have taken many whiffs to render the small girl-child unconscious. When she was out and unable to defend herself, multiple layers of duct tape were wrapped around the little girl's mouth and nose and into her hair to ensure that she never awoke from her chemically induced sleep."
When prosecutor Jeff Ashton made his arguments to the judge for the admission at trial of an animated demonstration of a photograph of Caylee superimposed on the child's skeletal remains, he confirmed my analysis of the evidence. "This demonstrates that a single piece of duct tape--testimony will show there were three--was sufficient to be placed over the nose and mouth of Caylee Anthony, thus ending her life."
Friday's testimony about duct tape--the murder weapon that took Caylee's life--may seal the deal in bringing justice to Caylee.
Dr. Garavaglia was indeed powerful. She will play an important role in achieving justice for Caylee.
ReplyDeleteI've been an admirer of hers ever since I interviewed her when I was researching THROUGH THE WINDOW, my book about serial killer Tommy Lynn Sells. At that time, she was working in San Antonio and had not yet gotten her television show.
ReplyDeleteSimple compelling evidence was given by Jan. Exactly what you listed in making Caylees situation unquestionably murder and Casey's drowning confession, places her with Caylee when she died.Jan explained there are no cases with no 911 call when a child drowns. This ought to be idiot proof for the most stupid juror who doodled during more complex expert evidence. Ashton in his final rebuttal made a very clear summation that was very easy to understand.
ReplyDeleteIt was impossible not to find Casey guilty of first degree murder, unless you were stupid, lazy , corrupt and preferred Baez's soap opera just made up for this type. Do you know why the jury were crying after agreeing on their verdict? Because they had been caught up in Baez's show, busy judging George whom they worked out in the end wasn't on trial and had no idea of what evidence there was formally given by the state on Casey. They knew the defence questined the state often and sometimes it seemed to make some evidence less certain. They did cue in Casey was guilty, but no idea what was proven soundly. You'd be expected with guilty to later state what was irrefutably convincing sounding. With not guilty, you can always say the evidence wasn't sufficient to eradicate doubt. Their tears were not over the miscarriage of justice they had to deliver, but extreme fear of what they may face from the nation.
